There is a popular song that goes like this:
"He's got the whole world in His Hands,
He's got my brothers and my sisters in His hands,
He's got the sun and the rain in His hands,
He's got everybody here in His hands."

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) provide a framework for the entire international community to work together towards a common end, making sure that human development reaches everyone, everywhere.  If these goals are achieved, world poverty will be cut by half, tens of millions of lives will be saved, and billions more people will have the opportunity to benefit from the global economy.

The 8 MDGs are:

GOAL 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
GOAL 2: Achieve universal primary education
GOAL 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
GOAL 4: Reduce child mortality
GOAL 5: Improve maternal health
GOAL 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
GOAL 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
GOAL 8: Develop a global partnership

It is important for us to consider what God's word says about these matters and how we should respond to the needs around us.  John Stott in his book Radical Disciple makes the following statement: "But because Jesus is Lord, we have no right to pick and choose the areas in which we will submit to his authority."  As Christ followers our basis for action is not in response to the call from earthly leaders but a response to God's Word and the spirit's leading.  Let's come before the Lord and examine our heart and His Word and respond accordingly.
